Oconto County Goes Wild with Winter’s Most Unconventional Races

This winter, Oconto County communities are proving that when it comes to racing on ice and snow, the weirder the vehicle, the better the time.

From bed frames to recliners to cardboard sleds, three uniquely quirky events are bringing laughter, competition, and community spirit to frozen lakes and snowy slopes across the county. Whether you’re a competitor or a spectator, these unconventional races promise memories that’ll last a lifetime.

Far From Snoozin’ Bed Races
Saturday, January 31st | Wendt’s Sandbar Resort, Townsend

Kick off the madness at Wendt’s Sandbar Resort in Townsend, where five-person teams will race metal bed frames across the ice. One lucky (or unlucky) teammate gets to ride the bed while the other four push their way to glory.

Event Details:

  • Beds will be provided
  • Costumes are strongly encouraged
  • Registration begins at 11 a.m.
  • Races start at noon
  • Bragging rights guaranteed

Get ready for the most fun you can have in your PJs—or whatever creative costume your team dreams up.

Recliner Races on the Ice
Saturday, February 7th | The Blind Walleye, Crooked Lake

Just a week later, The Blind Walleye hosts what might be the most comfortable (and hilarious) competition of the winter. Teams will push their teammates in recliners across frozen Bass Lake in a race that’s equal parts speed and comedy.

The Blind Walleye, known for its exceptional food and scenic lakeside views, provides the perfect backdrop for this laid-back yet wildly competitive event. Warm up afterward with great food and the kind of fish stories that only get better with retelling.

Cardboard Classics
Saturday, February 14th | Paul Bunyan Ski Hill, Lakewood

Love is in the air—and so are cardboard sleds! The Cardboard Classics at Paul Bunyan Ski Hill challenges teams to design, build, and race sleds made entirely of cardboard, glue, tape, and paint down the slopes.

The Rules:

  • Only cardboard, glue, tape, and paint allowed
  • No other materials permitted
  • Pure creativity and engineering

In this Valentine’s Day showdown, it’s artistry meets velocity, all held together with hope and determination. Teams compete for awards in fastest time, best design, and most team spirit.

Why We Love These Events
