Mountain

Visit Mountain, where the Northwoods begins and adventure never ends, inviting you to explore pristine National Forest trails, scenic overlooks, and authentic small-town hospitality in all four seasons.

Your journey to Mountain begins here

Welcome to Mountain, Wisconsin, where fierce logging heritage meets modern outdoor adventure at the southern gateway to the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Originally settled in 1877 as the Town of Armstrong, this community built its foundation on the logging industry’s strong work ethic and pioneering spirit. The town’s first homestead was constructed in 1877, followed by the post office in 1889 and official platting in 1896. In 1997, residents voted to embrace the name that best reflects the landscape they call home: Mountain.

Today, Mountain has evolved from its timber roots into a four-season tourism and recreation destination. Spanning 72 square miles with approximately 35,336 acres of Nicolet National Forest within its boundaries, Mountain offers endless outdoor recreational opportunities year-round. Experience spring’s trilliums carpeting the forest floor, summer’s diverse adventures, breathtaking fall vistas from our highest overlooks, and the serene beauty of fresh winter snowfall. Between explorations, discover authentic Wisconsin hospitality at our local bars, grills, and classic supper clubs, then extend your stay at one of our welcoming lodging properties. We invite you to experience all four seasons in Mountain – each one equally spectacular.

Events

Mountain’s tight-knit community comes alive throughout the year with events that celebrate small-town tradition and Northwoods spirit. Winter kicks off with the Fish O Rama ice fishing tournament at Chute Pond in February, followed by Chute Pond Vintage Snowmobile Days in March. Spring brings the Friends of Mountain Fire Department Kids Fish Pond and the MABA Memorial Weekend Parade through downtown Mountain, while the Mountain Historical Society Log Cabin welcomes visitors every Saturday from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Summer’s highlight is the beloved Independence Day Celebration at the Mountain Community Center, featuring all-day festivities that bring the community together. Fall ushers in the Mountain Sweet Trick or Treat event, and the year rounds out in December when Santa comes to town at the Community Center. From fishing tournaments to parades, historical exhibits to holiday celebrations, Mountain’s events create lasting memories and showcase the warmth of this welcoming Northwoods community.
