How WI Winter in Oconto County

Some places tolerate winter. Oconto County is built for it. From the hushed beauty of a snow-covered forest trail to the roar of a snowmobile engine, from the patience of ice fishing to the awe of a night sky that goes on forever, this is a county that knows how to winter.

Didn’t make it out this season? No worries, consider this your preview and your motivation. Start planning now so next winter is already on the calendar.

We documented the season through our How WI Winter series — five reels, five experiences, one unforgettable Wisconsin winter. Here’s a look at all five:

🌲  01  Silent Sports

Quiet trails, frozen falls, and endless memories.

When the snow falls and the trails go quiet, Oconto County transforms into a silent sports paradise. Whether you’re strapping on cross-country skis, lacing up snowshoes, or gliding along a groomed trail, the county’s forests and waterways offer an unmatched backdrop for peaceful winter adventure.

The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest provides miles of non-motorized trails perfect for those who want to experience winter on their own terms — no

engine required. Frozen waterfalls, snow-draped pines, and the kind of

stillness you can only find deep in Wisconsin’s northwoods make every outing a memory worth keeping.

🛷  02  Snowmobiling

Groomed trails, wide open throttle, and endless miles.

For those who prefer their winter with a little more horsepower, Oconto County delivers. With hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile trails connecting communities, forests, and wide-open stretches, the county is a snowmobiler’s dream.

Ride from trail to trail, stop in at a local bar or supper club for a warm-up, then throttle back into the trees. Whether you’re a seasoned rider chasing fresh powder or a family looking for a new winter tradition, the trails here are ready for you.

🎉  03  Winter Events

Wild races, unforgettable moments, and events like nowhere else.

Oconto County doesn’t hibernate in winter — it throws a party. From recliner races and bed races to ice golf, night ice go-kart racing, and fishing tournaments, the events calendar here is anything but ordinary.

These aren’t your typical winter festivals. They’re the kind of only-in-Wisconsin experiences that bring the whole community together and leave visitors with stories they’ll be telling for years. Bundle up and join the fun — there’s always something going on.

🎣  04  Ice Fishing

Tight lines, frozen lakes, and endless patience.

There’s a reason ice fishing is practically a religion in Wisconsin, and Oconto County is one of its holiest places. Set up your shanty on one of the county’s many frozen lakes, drill a hole, drop a line, and let the waiting begin.

Whether you’re targeting walleye, perch, or panfish, the lakes here don’t disappoint. And if patience isn’t your strong suit, don’t worry — the scenery, the camaraderie, and the occasional tip-up make every minute on the ice worthwhile.

🌌  05  Night Sky

Dark skies, dancing lights, and endless stars.

Look up on a clear Oconto County winter night and you might just forget to breathe. The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is a Bortle Class 2 dark sky — one of the darkest in the Midwest — meaning the stars here are something most people have never seen.

On lucky nights, the northern lights (aurora borealis) dance across the horizon in shades of green, pink, and purple. Whether you’re a seasoned astrophotographer or just someone who loves to stargaze, winter’s long, dark nights make Oconto County one of the best places in Wisconsin to witness the universe.
