Delve into Wisconsin's ancient past at the Copper Culture Museum in Oconto, situated within the significant Copper Culture State Park, where admission is free. This National Historic Site unveils the remarkable story of the Old Copper Culture people, early inhabitants and pioneers of the first metal-tooling industry in North America, crafting tools and ornaments from copper mined in the Lake Superior region. The museum showcases their unique way of life and survival through artifacts and exhibits, including a mock excavation pit for children.
Beyond the Copper Culture, the museum also displays more recent Native American artifacts. Visitors can take a self-guided tour or request an in-depth tour with a knowledgeable guide. A short trail leads to a stone monument marking the location of their ancient burial ground, dating back as far as 7,500 years, making it the oldest known in Wisconsin and one of the oldest in eastern North America. The museum is housed in the historic former home of the Werrebroeck family, Belgian immigrants who built the brick farmhouse in 1924.
