A vast panorama unfolds in every direction, showcasing the unparalleled beauty of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and the rolling landscapes of Oconto County. Imagine standing high above the treetops, the air crisp and clean, as your gaze stretches across a tapestry of budding lush greenery in the spring or the fiery hues of autumn. The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower isn’t just about the view, though that alone is worth the journey. It’s a tangible link to our past, a proud monument built in 1935 by the dedicated hands of the Forest Service and the Civilian Conservation Corps. This tower played a vital role in an extensive network that once watched over the former Nicolet National Forest, and its historical significance is undeniable. It stands as a testament to a time when vigilance and human connection were paramount in protecting our natural resources. In fact, it holds the distinct honor of being the first lookout tower in Wisconsin to be recognized on both the National Historic Lookout Register and the National Register of Historic Places – a truly remarkable achievement.

The story of this beloved landmark continues with its dedicated restoration in 2015-16. Thanks to the generous contributions and partnerships including local businesses, organizations, communities, and passionate residents, along with over 500 hours of dedicated work by the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District employees, the tower stands proudly today, ready for a new season of visitors.

Interestingly, of the fourteen original lookout towers that once dotted this forest, the Mountain Fire Lookout Tower is the only one that welcomes you to climb to its summit. Today, this impressive 100-foot steel tower, topped with its cozy 7-by-7-foot cab, offers that unique opportunity to connect with history and nature in an unparalleled way.

But why stop at just the view? Make your visit to the Mountain Fire Lookout Tower the centerpiece of a truly memorable getaway.
